Mathy Fruit Loops!

Hello! Happy Friday!

Today in Math we began exploring les rapports (ratio).

To help introduce the three different ways of writing ratio, we used a tasty treat - Fruit Loops!

We started by choosing 20 Fruit Loops from our snack cups, and then wrote different ratios comparing colours.

We learned that sometimes ratio can compare 3 (or more!) things at once. We also learned that sometimes a ratio can include a 0.

Please ask me about my Fruit Loop Math. What colours made up my 20 Fruit Loops? What colour was not included in our Fruit Loops?

Math is everywhere! :)

Dividing Decimal Numbers

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

This morning in Math we welcomed back Mrs. Jones for a 'division of decimal numbers' lesson.

Working with our table partner, we used base 10 blocks to represent numbers and show our steps. We also introduced a new 'block' to the group: les jetons (counters). These were used to represent les millièmes (thousandths).

Please ask me about dividing a decimal number using blocks. What steps did I understand? What part was the trickiest?

Monday Reminders and Agenda Items

Hi!

The end of Term 3 is quickly approaching and we are busy learning new things in Math and Français every day.

Our focus in Math this past week has been finishing up our percents/decimal numbers unit and we have started exploring improper fractions and mixed number fractions. We also continue to work on the multiplication of decimal numbers and will begin exploring division of decimal numbers in class tomorrow. Having a solid understanding of multiplication and division facts is SO important. Please ensure you are carving out time for daily practice. Even 5 minutes nightly adds up to a big difference!

Our focus in Français continues to be on daily reading, listening comprehension and applying homophones to our daily writing. We will be starting a new writing theme soon, so be sure to stay tuned to learn more!

Please take time to ask me about what we are learning in class. What is going well? What am I having difficulty with? Don't forget: Mme Careen is available over the noon hour to work one-on-one when concepts aren't understood. Check in with her at anytime to make an appointment.

Let's have a great week! :)

AAiM!

We had a great afternoon at the Royal Aviation Museum for AAiM (Aerospace and Aviation in Manitoba) Day!

We learned about Boeing and composite materials, we boarded a military aircraft, we designed straw rockets and paper airplanes, we learned about different airplane parts from a Perimeter airplane engineer and worked with a partner (tethered together and wearing space gloves!) to build a patch for a hole in a space craft hit by space debris!

Please check out some pictures of our afternoon together below. (And note: only half our our class is represented so far... we were split into two groups so half the group missed out on the Mme-arazzi).

Thanks all for a great aviation adventure!

Our tomatoes are coming along....

Our tomato seeds seem to be taking the "slow but steady" approach to growing, but things are coming along. Each group, T and U, currently has 6 germinated seeds, with more starting to peak through the soil each day.

Please ask me about my tomato plants. How are my seeds doing? Any signs of growing?

Tomatosphere!

Today was an exciting day in Room 208! We planted Space Tomatoes! :)

How might someone plant a space tomato?
Here's our planting method:

As part of a 'blind test,' we planted two types of seeds - one from a control group and another from a group of seeds that went to space on SpaceX CRS-21 commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS). (The seeds left Earth on December 6, 2020 and spent more than a month on the ISS. They were retuned to Earth on January 14, 2021 landing in a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.)

We each planted 2 seeds - one from each seed group. The groups this year are "T" and "U" but we don't yet know which letter belongs to what seed group (hence the blind test). After planting our seeds, we placed our peat pots in mini-greenhouses (seedling trays with humidity covers), away from direct sunlight and cold-air drafts in order to provide ideal growing conditions.

We will make daily observations every day for the next 30 days. Our daily observations will include writing the date, the day of the experiment, the time of the observation, the temperature of the class and how many seeds from each group have germinated. It is expected that the seeds will start germinating between days 5 and 7, meaning we should start seeing tiny stems and leaves as early as Wednesday or Thursday!

As the experiment continues, we will discuss the need for collecting this type of data as it pertains to humans colonizing Mars. We will explore the Scientific Method and learning how to: write detailed hypotheses, analyze and graph our collected data and represent our findings in well-written conclusions.

At the conclusion of the experiment, we will be submitting our results to Tomatosphere, and at that point we will discover the identities of the seed groups!

Participation in this month-long experiment will not only help Canadian scientists address the question of how we supply space exploration missions with life support requirements, it may also inspire us to pursue studies in Science and Technology as our space scientists and Mars explorers of the future.

Pretty cool, right? 🍅

T or U? Which group of seeds went to space?

We are planting our seeds!

We are getting our seeds tucked away into their greenhouse homes.

We named our seeds and whispered lots encouraging words to them so that they'll grow!

We'll be keeping an eye on our seedlings for the next 30 days and tracking our observations along the way.

Check back for more tomato news soon! :)

"Whether you believe you can or you can't, you're right." - Henry Ford.

We started our day with a presentation by LiveDifferent.

LiveDifferent is a movement that celebrates caring for people. There message is one of "bringing people together, taking action and changing the world."

Please ask me about the presentation. What 'wacky' world records did I learn about? What kind of sandwiches were shared? What stories stuck with me? How am I going to challenge myself to be better to myself and others each day?

Space Tomatoes Coming Soon!

 Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Math/Français we got a sneak peek of our upcoming space-rific experiment! In class this morning, we watched a short video of astronaut Thomas Pesquet (see the the video HERE) talking about the Tomastosphere program and the importance of having fresh food in space.

Stay tuned for more tomato news over the next few days! It's going to be great! 🍅
