The Last Day of School!

 Hello, friends of learning! Happy last day of Grade 6!

We had a fun, busy morning to cap off our year together.

Today's events included: our last-day-of-school pictures, a Math QBitz Challenge, a Super 6-3 Kahoot Quiz (with 63 questions!!), our last Spot the Difference as a class, a video of memories and Mme Careen shaking our hands one last time as we left Room 208.

Second last day of school!

Hello! Today was the second last day of school. We started the day with an assembly, had a short block to work on our Summer Mad Libs and then were off to PA for our last class of the year.

Tomorrow, we will take last-day-of-school pictures, level-up our QBitz game, play our Super Kahoot and do a final handshake at the door as we say our goodbyes.

Angles and Q-Bitz Challenge

One more tomato, and an angles song!

Hello! Happy Monday! Happy last week of school!

Adding one more tomato to our Haiku harvest this morning.

Also, this morning in Math we completed a lesson on angles.

We learned that there are 5 different types of angles, based on their measure, and we also learned how to use a protractor (un rapporteur) to measure a variety of angles.

We also listened to this AMAZING SONG!

Tomorrow, we will use a protractor to draw angles. So fun!

* Tomorrow, period 5, students will have a chance to clean out their locker and pack their supplies for home. Bringing an extra bag to carry home supplies is encouraged.

A 2-in-1 post! Algebra and Tomato Results!

Hello! Happy Wednesday and Thursday!

In all the Math and anticipated tomato-results excitement, I forgot to post to our blog yesterday! So, please enjoy this double-feature post. :)

Yesterday in Math, we were happy to welcome back Mrs. Jones! Our goal was to work with with Math mobiles, but with an added twist. We'll call them Mobiles 6.3! (Thanks to Kieron for the suggestion!)

We have worked with mobiles in the past, but our goal today was to consider how we could write an algebraic equation to represent the different parts (arms?) of the mobile. Algebra?! Yikes?!

Although algebra sounds intimidating, it really isn't so bad! Instead of writing a ? or an empty box in place of an unknown value, we can use a variable (a lowercase letter). A variable represents an unknown value in an expression or equation that can be solved when a value (number) can be substituted in.

Ex: 15 + ? = 23
Instead of using ?, we'll use a to represent the unknown value.
So, 15 + ? = 23 can be written 15 + a = 23.
We know that the difference between 15 and 23 (23-15) is 8, so for this equation, a = 8 !

We will continue having fun with algebra over the next couple of days before tackling our last mini-unit of the year. (Hint - it will have us using a cool new Math tool!)

Now, on to our tomatoes!

Our plants are replanted and our final observations have been submitted to Tomatosphere.

For Group T, we planted 25 seeds and had 17 germinate. In this group, we had one peat pot growing 2 plants (?!) and another sprouting and growing from the bottom of the peat pot!

For Group U, we planted 25 seeds and had 21 germinate. In this group, we had 2 plants grow stems but never lose their 'seed helmet' so we could not consider them germinated.

The national germination % was actually opposite what we observed, which was quite interesting.


After seeing the national results, we voted as a class one last time for which group we thought was the 'space seed' group. 5 students voted that Group T represented the space seeds and 11 voted that Group U contained the seeds that went to space.

To celebrate the end of our Tomatosphere experiment, we are writing delicious tomato-themed Haiku.

Tomatoes!

 Hello! Happy Monday!

We had a chance to re-pot our tomato plants to bring home and also celebrated our tomatoes by writing and special tomato-themed Haiku! Many of us finished our drafts today and will be ready to publish our poems tomorrow. Be sure to check back to read our poetic words! 🍅

If you brought your tomato plant(s) home today, please be sure to set them up near a window and water them often! When time to replant again, there is no need to remove the plant from its current pot; the pot will break down in new soil allowing the roots to continue to grow and take root in its bigger home. Happy tomato growing! :)

Students had the chance to work through some practice questions in class today and have their sheets in their binder. Students who did not finish the practice questions in class today are strongly encouraged to complete them this evening. Students having difficulty with any of these topics, even after the review and short assessment have been completed, are encouraged to drop in tomorrow (Thursday) over the noon hour for extra support.

Les textes injonctifs!

Today in Français we continued our work on les textes injonctifs.

After colouring our delicious ice cream cones on Friday, we took time to check out texts with a classmate or two to see if our instructions were clear.

Mme Careen will now read our texts and provide feedback which we will have a chance to apply to our next texte injonctif that'll we'll start in class on Wednesday.

Our next step is to test out the steps with a partner to see how clear we were with our instructions. Please ask me about my cone; what colours did I choose? Did I test with a partner yet? If so, how did it go?

Dividing Decimal Numbers!

Hello! Mrs. Jones was back with us this morning to continue exploring the division of decimal numbers. The goal for Grade 6 is to divide a decimal number by a single-digit number.

Today we combined using blocks (paper versions of blocks) with representing (drawing) our steps.

Our next step will be to work backwards - looking at picture representation of a division equation and figuring out what the original question was.

Once we have a handle on that, we will connect the symbols (the traditional long-division algorithm) to what we have already learned.

Tomato Update!

We are nearing the end of our Tomatosphere experiment. Today is Day 24.

The experiment is set to last 30 days, which brings us to this coming Sunday. So, we will make our final observations a week from today and then send our results off to Tomatosphere so we can learn which group of seeds is which.

Please ask me about my tomato plants! Do I have at least one germinated seed? Does my plant still have two leaves, or more than two?
