We recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – tomorrow, September 30 – to honour survivors of the residential school system and those who never made it home.
This year, we will learn together about Elder Mary Courchene’s (cour-SHANE) life story. We will use her experiences to learn about the treaty relationship, the medicine wheel, residential schools, important moments in Indigenous history, and living a good life. You can listen to Mary's story here: Mary's Story
We are learning about these topics because we are all Treaty people. Our land is Treaty One land, and we all benefit from the agreements Indigenous peoples made with government.
Cadmus Delorme, the chief of Cowessess First Nation on Treaty 4 land in Saskatchewan said, “We all inherited this. Nobody today created Residential Schools. Nobody today created the Indian Act. Nobody today created the ’60s Scoop. We all inherited it and we have to acknowledge that people are healing and people are hurting. Let’s do something about it.”
Our learning this year responds to Chief Delorme’s call to do something about it. We’ll hear from Mary several times this year. She will share stories through videos, as oral storytelling is an important aspect of Indigenous culture.
Tomorrow (Saturday, September 30) is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Here are some ideas of things you could do with your family:
Hello! Happy Thursday!
Today in Math we challenged a partner to "Addition War." Similar to the traditional 'War' card game, students flip over a card and add the two numbers together. The student who says the correct answer first (and en français!) wins the cards.
We will play this game again next week, but will be switching from addition to multiplication. The more familiar we are with our foundational facts, the more confident we will be with the upcoming new Math concepts.
This game is easily played at home. Grab a deck of cards and get started! :)

Hello! Happy Monday!
Today in Math we set out to solve the following problem:
If you write out the numbers from 1 to 1000, how many times will you write the number 7?
Working in randomized groups of three at the white boards, we each approached the question a bit differently and were stumped when Mme kept telling us we didn't have the right answer! What?!
After a few hints and some re-working, a few of us were able to find the solution, and moved on to the extension question: Would the answer be the same for each digit (0 - 9)? What digits might have a different answer and why?
Please ask me about my work: what approach did my group take? Did we arrive at the answer? How would I organize my work next time to make it easier to follow?

Have a great weekend! :)

Happy Thursday!
Today in Mathématiques we spent time practicing our multiplication and division skills with a partner using triangle flash cards.
Remember: Multiplication is like a 2 for 1 special - if you can multiply two numbers together, you already know how to divide the product two different ways!
Please ask me about the Math flash cards: How are my foundational facts? What facts do I know well? Which ones might need reviewing? Am I feeling confident or should be also spend time practicing at home?

Hello!
Today in Français, we began learning about our daily reading routine, LALALA, and started with 7 minutes of independent reading (LA = Lecture Autonome). We will continue to increase our reading time over the next couple of days until we reach 10 minutes. We will also continue adding additional reading/literacy activities during this block of time when we show we are ready to do so. Please ask me about the book I read? What was it about? Was it a good fit more me? Am I reading for something more challenging?
Stay tuned for more reading new coming soon!

Hello, friends of learning!
Thank you for your patience... blog-posting technology was just not working in my favour this afternoon! 😐
Anyhow.
Today in Math, we tried something new! Working (standing) at vertical non-permanent spaces (ie. the white boards), in randomized groups of 3, with only one whiteboard marker to share, we set out to work through the following question:
Sum 51: How many six-digit numbers are there whose digits sum to 51?
After reviewing important vocabulary (sum: la somme (answer to an addition question), digit: un chiffre), we were on our way!
Please ask me: How did my group work together? Did we have a strategy? Did our strategy change over the course of the lesson? What did we notice? How many 6-digit numbers did we find? Did we find them all?

Hello, friends of learning!
Friday morning has come and gone, and we are ready for the weekend! (A full week of school is no joke! Phew!)
*
We started our day with a new Math starter, "Cible." A target number is posted on the board, and we figure out (using the mental-math part of our brains) what number pair we need to reach it.
We will continue this routine throughout the year with a variety of numbers, from very small to very large, in order to keep our mental-math strategies strong.
Next up, another story!
And then, another getting-to-know-you activity... but this time with food! Yum! (Please ask me what I shared with my classmates! Did I have anything in common with the other members of my group?)

Hello families! It's the fifth day of middle school!
This morning we read the story, We're All Friends Here. It was fun to see the same story from two different points of view. This is a good reminder for us to be kind to one another - we can never be sure what someone else is going through.

Hello, friends of learning! Happy Wednesday!
We started our morning with another great book, We Don't Eat Our Classmates. We all had a good laugh at the story line and the expressions on the characters' faces!
We also we played a French game together as a class. It is a Who Am I/ Guess Who format that uses a game board and a set of clues to help figure out who the mystery person is. Today, the version of the game was Pirates! And, Mme Careen made us say our answers in a pirate 'accent', just for fun. 😁

Hello! Happy Tuesday!
Our third morning of middle school was a good one!
We started the day with another fun school-themed story.
We then reviewed "les quatre valeurs d'un chevalier" (Respect, Intégrité, Responsabilité et Excellence) and began reflecting on how we can represent the values every day at school. This task lead to our first "thinking homework" task of the year: How can Mme demonstrate the 4 values in our classroom each day, and how can we exemplify "RIRE" to ourselves and each other? We will continue our discussion on class tomorrow.
We finished our morning with a small group tangram activity. Working in randomized groups of two or three, we worked together to solve different tangram puzzles. We all had different levels of success... (Congratulations to Gwen, Cooper and Hailey, the only team to successfully solve the square puzzle!) ... but we all worked well with our teams - even attempting to speak to each other in French some of the time!
Looking forward to another great day tomorrow! :)

Hello! Happy First Day of School!
We had a busy first morning of middle school! The time flew by as we: listened to Mme Careen read us a special first-day-of-school story, had a whole-school assembly, learned where to line up for the bus, took our first-day-of-school photos, attended our first Band/Art class, found our way to Mme Houlahan's room, learned how to use a combination lock for our very own locker, and began to meet and learn the names of our new classmates. Phew!
Please enjoy a few pics from our first morning together!
It is SO great to be back and have a classroom full of smiling faces! 😁
Have a great weekend! Enjoy the sunshine!
