C'est l'Halloween! 🎃

C'est mardi! C'est l'Halloween!

This morning in class we worked on Halloween-themed Math puzzles, listened to Mme's favourite Halloween song (you can LISTEN TO IT HERE!) and completed Halloween-themed Français puzzles. Fun!

A Snowy Thursday

Hello friends of learning!
Happy Thursday! Happy first snowfall!

To celebrate snow, we completed a mystery "Brrrr" coordinate picture in Math.
Can you guess what it might be?

Ta da! A snowman!

In Français, we logged in to our home reading site Je Lis for the first time. While some students have used this site in the past, it was new to many of us today.

After watching/listening to Mme model how to use the site, we had a chance to get started.

Daily reading in French is SO important and is one of the most valuable ways we can improve our vocabulary and comprehension. Start planning how to make it a part of your daily evening routine at home; even 10 minutes or one short book per day will have a huge impact over the course of the year.
(More info about Je Lis and additional reading sources is coming via email tomorrow (Friday).)
Happy reading! :)

Mental Math Sharing

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Math we learned two new mental math strategies to add to the previous four we have been exploring. After practicing together as a whole class, we each chose a strategy to try on our own, and then partnered up with a classmate (who chose a different strategy than us) to explain the steps of how we arrived at the answer. Taking time to explain our thinking to someone else allows us to deepen our own understanding.

Please ask me: what strategy did I try today? What strategy did my partner use? Which of the two strategies do I prefer? Why?

Photo mystère! Math + Art

Hello! Happy Wednesday!

Today in Math we began applying our knowledge of coordinates and the cartesian plane to create a picture. What is the picture of? Mystery!

We were provided with a list of coordinates to draw onto our graph paper and are connecting the coordinates as we go (like a dot-to-dot activity).

Once all 'dots' have been placed and connected, the mystery picture will be revealed!

We will have a chance to colour the final pictures before Mme displays them on the bulletin board in our classroom.

Stay tuned to see what Math pictures we create!

Netmath (+ many agenda items)

Today in Math students were introduced to Netmath. It is an online site that provides practice questions connected with concepts we are currently learning in Math. Students completed an intro lesson and were then assigned 2 'books' to complete today. Most were able to complete the assigned books, with the remaining students getting a good start. Students are asked to have the intro lesson and the 2 assigned 'books' completed for Thursday. The assigned books are posted on the student's homepage in Netmath, and once completed, will no longer appear.

Students can google "Netmath" or use this link: https://www.netmath.ca/fr/
They will click "Se connecter" in the top right corner, and then log in using their first and last name and their school login password.

Math Battleship!

Hello! Happy Monday!

Today in Math we played Math Battleship!

After placing our 4 watercraft on our cartesian plane game sheet, we attempted to locate our partner's ships by calling out different coordinate points to see if it was a 'hit' or a 'miss.' The first person to sink all their partner's ships was declared the winner!

Please ask me about my game-play strategy: How did I choose to place my ships? Did I win or did my partner find all of my ships first?

AGENDA

1. "Thinking Homework" - Today in Français we began discussing how to make an action for a goal, using our Terry Fox article as a guide. (See photo below.) Our thinking homework for tonight: What would need to be included in my action plan if my goal was to run across Canada for cancer awareness? Please be ready to share at least one idea with the class tomorrow.

Math and Partner Reading!

Hello, friends of learning!

Today in Math we continued reviewing addition mental math strategies, adding 2 new strategies to our mental math toolbox.

Please ask me what strategy I chose to try in class today. What do I like about this strategy? Are there any steps I struggle with?

*

In Français, we practiced "Lecture Avec Partenaire." The expectations when reading with a partner are: we read the same book, we are on the same page, we share the reading equally, we sit together and read at a good volume, we help each other with challenging words and we read without stopping (we are on task for the entire reading block).

Please ask me who I read with today. What was our book about?

Have a nice afternoon! :)

Cible 83!

Hello! Happy Tuesday!

Today in Math we tackled another "Target Number" starter.
Today's number was 83.

Some of us found this target number a bit tricky because it was an odd number and a bit larger than numbers we have already tried.

Please ask me: what mental math strategies can I use when trying to hit the target number?

Pro tip: This is an easy "Math practice at home" activity that can be done in the car on the way to after-school activities or around the dinner table. Choose a target number (we are focusing on 2-digit numbers for now) and get started!

Ex: Target 83.
I have 82, you need ____.
I have 32, you need ____.
And so on.

Give it a try this evening! What target number will you choose?

Math-Magic Estimation!

Hello! Happy Friday!

We started our morning with a "real life" esti-mystery: how many packing peanuts can we fit into a tin can? We made predictions and then Mme Careen put them to the test!
Our estimations for the first two (larger) cans were pretty close, but our estimation for the smaller soup-sized can was waaaay off.... by more than 200!! But, how?!

Mme Careen was sooo tricky! Please ask me about our trick-can predictions and how Mme was actually able to fit all of those packing peanuts into 1 can!

🦃

We ended the morning with a Thanksgiving-themed Math/Français activity.
Working on our own or with a partner, we solved a series of questions in an 'Amazing Race' style that had us writing 5-letter words, calculating falling leaves and solving word problems about tables and chairs. So fun!

Please ask me: who did I work with? What question was the most challenging and why? Was I able to complete all the questions before time was up?

🦃

Wishing you all a safe, relaxing and turkey-filled weekend!

Le plan cartésien

 Hello! Happy Thursday!

Today in Math we kicked off our first Grade 6 Math concept by reading the book:

(You can listen the book HERE).

We learned about the first quadrant of the Cartesian plane (le plan cartésien), the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axes and that the Brigand Band is scared of ghosts...

We will continue to learn about the Cartesian plane over the coming week: how to find and plot coordinates, how to describe the movement between points and how to draw pictures! Fun!

Stay tuned for more Cartesian plane news! :)

Picture it!

Hello! Happy Monday!
Check out today's Math starter:

According to this parking lot picture, how many people might work in the nearby building?

What is your prediction? How did your arrive at that estimation? What information do you know for sure? What can you assume? What else might help us arrive at a more accurate answer?

Happy discussing! :)
